One of the most easily measured features of apoptotic cells is the break-up of the genomic DNA by cellular nucleases. Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) is a method for detecting DNA fragmentation by labeling the 3′-hydroxyl termini in the double-strand DNA breaks generated during apoptosis.
